There were five by-elections this week. Conservatives held seats in both East Lindsey and Selby (the councillor causing the by-election was originally elected as a Yorkshire Party candidate). Labour held two seats in Charnwood and another in East Lothian.

On Thursday 23rd December an Independent gained a seat from Conservatives in New Forest. On Thursday 6th January Liberal Democrats gained a seat from Labour in Gedling.
